The Centre's Mission:

To enhance student learning in Ontario by significantly advancing the effectiveness of Ontario's School Council system.

The Ontario School Council Support Centre is designed to provide you and your council members with resources and ideas for focusing on issues that will have a positive impact on student learning.  It is designed to provide information and resources on a widely available and 'self serve basis'.

The School Council system in Ontario is only ten years old.  It has come a long way in that time, but it still has a long way to go.

Your role in guiding the School Council cannot be understated.

With your guidance, the School Council can become focused on initiatives that can and will have a positive impact on student learning.

To organize parental and community involvement into your school plan for continuous improvement, take a look at the eight types of involvement framework.

With your guidance, the School Council can become focused on your school's goals for continuous improvement, and work in concert with you and your staff to work towards a set of common goals.

This page will evolve to address the unique challenge you face in leading and working with the School Council.

This site will evolve to address the needs of council members across Ontario, many of whom are dealing with very similar issues.

Please drop back from time to time over the next few months - there will be more material for you, and for your council members.

In the meantime, please have a look at the For Parents page and the links designed for Council leadership (Principals and Chairpersons).

The creation of this Centre was based on the research and recommendations contained within the following paper:

Ontario's School Councils:  Leading Them Forward to Have an Impact on Student Learning

This paper was presented at the 14th International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement in Toronto in January 2001.

One of the most highly recommended links for educators is the National Network of Partnership SchoolsDr. Joyce Epstein's Six types of Involvement framework provides an excellent method of focusing School Council and a school community on initiatives that will have an impact on student learning.
