This type of involvement is modified for Ontario to recognize the broad role that school councils play within a school.  Epstein's original title for this was decision-making, but school councils do so much more than that.

In The Road Ahead III, the Education Improvement Commission suggested three specific areas to focus on to achieve the goal of improving student learning.

1.  Stimulating meaningful parental and community involvement in the school.  This refers to engaging parents and the community in as many of these types of involvement as possible.

2.  Participating in the school improvement planning process.  Understanding, contributing and supporting the plan is an essential method for bringing educators and parents together in the interests of our students.

3.  Providing advice to the Principal and Board.
